My first Billy Blastoff was the Pre-Apollo, red, white and blue Billy. I got the walking Apollo style Billy for Christmas in about '71 when I was five years old. It was the year my brother got the Beatles, "Let It Be," album. I remember listening to "I Dig A Pony," While Billy slowly meandered down the hall. Ah, happy memories...

My memory of Billy blast off has haunted me since Christmas day 1968, let me explain.
I was 4 years old in 1968 and my brother Mike was 9, you do the math. As usual I was the first one up on Christmas morning. When everyone awoke and come out to the living room to see what Santa had brought them they were well let's just say they were in shock! My dad exclaimed what the heck! Iturned to my brother Mike, and said "Hey Bubby look what Santa brought You". Well, every year to this day at Christmas time I have to hear this story over, and over, and over. This next Christmas I would like to surprise him with a Billy Blast off. Any ideas?? What great memories though. By the way I opened not only his Billy Blast off but every gift under the tree, except for one, and that was my gift!

My Billy (which I still have, yeah, yeah, pathetic, I know) is the blue scuba Billy. When I was a child in Cornwall, NY he "fell" off of a small bridge downtown and was washed over a small dam. As I recall I was rather upset. I went back everyday looking for him, until a few days later my brother found him some distance downstream. I found out years later that my parents had bought another one and gotten my older brother to play along. Of course, I'm still in therapy over that! LOL!

I got Billy Blastoff and Robbie Robot for Christmas in 1969, along with a Barnabas Collins game, and other toys typical of that time. I made a little coin renting him out to my classmates until my little rental business was discovered by my teacher. I remember trying to wake my Father up, because I was not able to install his batteries. Dad was very tired, but he did get me going! I think that toy is a big part of why I remember that Christmas so well. My brothers got Johnny Quest toys, and my sister got a plastic kitchen! 1969 was a great year!

I can't believe I am reading posts about Billy Blast Off! I was given mine at Christmas of '68 when I was 3 years and 8 months old. He was my first action/robot toy (that I can remember anyway). This was the space Billy with backpack and land rover. I remember playing with him on the coffee table thinking it was the moon. He went by the way side only God knows when. I have always thought of him fondly. I have 8 brothers and sisters and even they know who he is. He has become the catchprase of "oldies, but goodies" whenever we reminisce. I puchased one from ebay for $55 in 2005 (it doesn't work though).I couldn't believe when I saw it.Thanks

I got my first Billy Blastoff for Christmas, 1967. I was 7 years old. I got it with the Moon Walker and the the little crawler and the tank treaded thing. Looking at the price now I am surprised I got so much. We weren't wealthy and my mom must have really saved to have gotten me so many attachments, etc.
Reading the comments above I am amazed at how similar our experiences were, and our memory's of those great years. The Space Program was well underway and for the next three years, everything was Space Space Space. Space Tang. Spacemen. Space helmets. Space ships. Space Space Space.
What a wonderful time to be alive and what great memories reading everyone's comments brings back to me. Billy Blastoff was clearly an icon of the 60's. Thanks for sharing your memories everyone. 67 to 69. What great years they clearly were, full of wonder, excitement and hope for the future.

By the way, the next year I got the "Matt Mason" Mattel's Man in Space. I got two of them actually. One was Matt and the other one had an orange suit instead of the white one. I noticed these in your catalog ad above. Cool toys too.
