The Carpenters give the clarinet player some on this "rocker". Can't see any way that this one isn't live. The singing is incredibly fast and complicated, almost like a scat (and it's almost imposssible to mime to a "voice-over"). It stops, starts, speeds up and slows down all over the place. Maybe that Bacharach medley isn't live (I still think it is) but I think this disproves the idea that the drums don't have enough mics on them to sound that good. One 414 over the kit + a kick drum mic and whatever's bleeding thru the vocal mic seems to be doing the trick.

I only saw this one today! It's an odd one for sure......the bass and guitar aren't cabled, the sax player doesn't appear to be playing (watch his cheeks), yet the drums have a "live" sound to them (they actually sound poorly recorded). I don't know what to say about it. If you've ever worked with a group and rehearsed a song over and over again you'll realize that it's easy to follow along with even complex arrangements so that doesn't count for too much. I suspect it was canned, with the group following a live tape of themselves, once again, because some shows were still broadcast "live" and, in order to keep mistakes to a minimum, the performances were taped and then mimed (if that makes any sense).

Well Big Island guy. The sax player is playing and the guitars are cabled! It's a gretsch bass and a telecaster. They both plug in not on the face of the instrument but along the edge.
It's not canned. The only remote possibility is that they pre-taped right there and then sang to it. Judging by the Carpenters levels of quality control, they would never let this recording out.
You find the studio session and prove me wrong.
Thanks for more quality video.
