I loved this song by the Brothers Johnson when I was a kid. Who knew it was a cover of an even better version (come to think of it-I do remember knowing it was a cover of a song by a guy named Shuggie Otis but you couldn't really hear that record until it got re-issued on cd....).

Dude, I'm floating on clouds now. In my opinion, one of the greatest r&b/funk songs EVER.
I heard rumors that Lee Ritenour wound up doing the the solo rifts on the Brothers Johnson version, since they couldn't pull it off. Mind you, those two guys were two of the best session men around. Getting Ritenour to jump in makes the tune more special. And I never even knew it was a cover until now.

Always loved this song, had never seen the writing credit and had no idea the record was a cover version--so glad to learn of and hear the original. Another gem.
Thanks, Percy

BOTH Strawberry Letters are one of the most well produced records of that era
The Brothers Johnson version is exceptionally well produced

yea quincy jones produced it in his prime...but the shuggie otis version? he wrote that shit and played almost every instrument on the song.....at age 18 (might be wrong but i thinks so)
that entire shuggie lp is probably one of the best rnb lps ever recorded....
and im an asshole that hates everything.....

Hey Tee, glad you found the Bunny Brown version. There were three cuts of that track ( 7", 12", and instrumental) Some session trivia..Tommy Eyre ( Hammond organ on Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help from My Friends" played synths . Dick Morrisey played sax. Mel Gaynor ( Simple Minds) played drums. Sketch from Lynx played bass..David Grant was one of the backup singers. Burt Salvari (original Lynx member) played guitar.
Cheers, Gwyn
