I saw the Carpenters in concert here in Calif around this time, and the Bacharach-David medley is exactly how I remember it --it's a shame they never got the entire medley on record like this...or that Karen's rendition of Any Day Now is not on record anywhere. I hope some exec in Australia sees the potential in releasing this on DVD - I think it has much more market appeal than the Captain and Tennille or Tony Orlando and Dawn DVD sets that just got released...

Absolutely stunning medley.
Good to see Frank Pooler, but where exactly is the orchestra people he is conducting. I assume that is what he is doing?
Agree that this is the definitive Carpenters medley. In addition to "Any Day Now", I love the verses to "Make it Easy On Yourself"
I never thought Scott Walker of the Walker Brothers could be challenged on the latter song, and in my heart of hearts it really is his song. The Carpenters take the song somewhere different to avoid such comparisons. They are the best interpreters of Bacharach across the board, bar none including Dionne Warwick.
What does it for me is Karen Carpenter mastering both the rhythmic and melodic imlications of these great songs - doing both at the same time. How I WISH they had continued in the same vein for many more years - imagine how they would sound today. Tragedy.
