"My Friend Jack" by The Smoke and More "Jack" songs

Smoke_pic1I was searching my iTunes for this song "My Friend Jack" by The Smoke and noticed I have a lot of songs with the word Jack in them. Here is a sampling...

"My Friend Jack" by The Smoke.mp3 is a great Creation/Who style Pop Rocker (Buy CD from Amazon)

"My Friend Jack" by The Wondermints.mp3 is an amazing cover of the Smoke's song. (Buy Wonderful World of the Wondermints from Amazon)

"Happy Jack" by Pete Townshend.mp3 is a great demo from his amazing "Scoop" series. (Buy Scoop, Another Scoop and Scoop 3 from Amazon)

"Billy Jack" by Curtis Mayfield.mp3 has nothing to do with the film, I don't think, although I could be wrong. (Buy There's No Place Like America Today on Amazon)

"Bloody Jack" by Serge Gainsbourg.mp3 is about Jack the Ripper, I think. (Buy Comic Strip from Amazon)

"Jack The Ripper" by Screaming "Lord" Sutch.mp3 is about Jack the Ripper, I'm sure. (buy Hands of Jack the Ripper from Amazon)

"Jack The Ripper" by Link Wray.mp3 is a different song altogether. (Buy Mr. Guitar)

"Jack and Jill".mp3 by Tommy Roe is a great proto-Bubblegum rocker. (Buy Tommy Roe - Greatest Hits)

"Long Tall Jack" by Heinz.mp3 is typical crack-pot Joe Meek genius track for Joe's favorite artist Heinz. It's been said that Heinz's records are some of Joe's best productions because he was so in love with him. (Buy Just Like Eddie)

I'd like to dedicate "Cadillac Jack" by Andre Williams.mp3 to my buddy The Record Brother.

"Sleep Over Jack" by Guided By Voices.mp3 provides the title to their final record "Half Smiles of the Decomposed".

"From A Jack to a King" by Ned Miller.mp3. I'll always associate this song with the old "Ludlow Street Cafe" days (circa the early 90's), when Beat Rodeo bassist Dan Prater would always sing this one on thier Monday night residency.

    Video: The Cowsills on "Upbeat!"

Cowsills_upbeatThe Cowsills (look them up if you don't know who they are-short version, they're the real life Partridge Family) on Cleveland's local music show "Upbeat!"

Lipstick on a pig is a classic American phrase.

    LipstickpigmccainJosh Marshall says:

"Let's face it. Lipstick on a pig is a classic American phrase. And there's just no better way to describe the McCain-Palin ticket. The 'Reformer' whose whole campaign and senate office is run by a crew of high-rolling DC lobbyists? The earmark slayer whose state this year got ten times more earmarks than any other state in the country? Whose city when she was mayor got twenty times as many? The whole operation is just one big bamboozling lie. And lipstick on a pig is just using good American English to explain it. If McCain and Palin don't like it they should have thought of that before they decided to run as frauds."

    Glen Campbell "Guess I'm Dumb"

My favorite "Pet Sounds" era Brian Wilson song. By Glen Campbell. I wish The Beach Boys had done this one too, but it couldn't possibly have been any better than this.

Back Porch Majority "The Mighty Mississippi" Scopitone

MightymississippiThis Scopitone is evidently one of the main things that brought down Scopitone. The squeeky-clean Back Porch Majority sued Scopitone for I think, upwards of a million dollars, for sullying their image by inserting "lewd" shots like the one on the left. Damn you Back Porch Majority! You killed Scopitones!

    "No Maverick"

Obama Did Not Call Sarah Palin A Pig

LipstickpigObama Did Not Call Sarah Palin A Pig

    Marc Ambinder lays it out:

"The first McCain truthsquadding telephone call is taking place right now, and ex-MA Gov. Jane Swift is complaining about an idiom Barack Obama used today:

Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.
"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."
"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."
"We've had enough of the same old thing."

    Suddenly, common analogies are sexist?

The McCain campaign has little respect for Obama, but they don't think he is stupid. And the only way one can conclude that Obama meant to refer to Gov. Sarah Palin as a pig is to have concluded that Obama is as dumb as a doornail.

Obama is fond of this particular phrase. To wit, in 2007:

'I think that both General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker are capable people who have been given an impossible assignment,' Sen. Barack Obama said yesterday in a telephone interview. 'George Bush has given a mission to General Petraeus, and he has done his best to try to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig.

And so is John McCain. Speaking about Hillary Clinton....

McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health-care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the 1990s.

"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal.

Country's 'Guitar Man' Jerry Reed Dies

Singer-turned-actor Jerry Reed, known as "The Guitar Man" of country music, has died aged 71. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Reed released more than 40 albums over a long career that started when he was just 18.

After scoring US hits like Amos Moses and When You're Hot, he broke into cinema in the 1970s, appearing in all three Smokey and the Bandit movies. The star, who had quadruple bypass surgery in 1999, died on Monday of complications arising from emphysema. He had recently been cared for in a hospice, Country Music Television in Nashville reported. Sony BMG Nashville Chairman Joe Galante called Reed a larger-than-life personality.

"Everything about Jerry was distinctive - his guitar playing, writing, voice and especially his sense of humour," Galante said. "I was honoured to have worked with him." Reed's booking agent, Carrie Moore-Reed (not a relation), called the singer-songwriter "one of the greatest entertainers in the world". Link.

MP3s: "Morning Dew" by Lee Hazlewood, The Move, Tim Rose, Tony Hatch And Jackie Trent & Vince Martin & Fred Neil

    Post42767211867476171

From the Wikipedia: "Morning Dew", also known as "(Walk Me Out in the) Morning Dew", is a post-apocalyptic folk-rock song written by Canadian singer Bonnie Dobson in 1962, that has become a standard."

"According to Dobson in a 1993 interview, "Morning Dew" was inspired by the film On the Beach.[1]"

"Fred Neil heard Dobson's song and re-arranged it to suit his own style. Tim Rose heard Neil's version and then recorded his own in 1966, adding himself as co-writer. Through a loophole in US copyright law, Rose was able to claim royalties."

"The song is most popularly known today as a cover by the Grateful Dead."

No Grateful Dead version here. If anyone has any other good versions, send em to me and I'll post 'em. (You can sample and buy Bonnie's version "Take Me for a Walk" from Amazon)
