MP3s: "Morning Dew" by Lee Hazlewood, The Move, Tim Rose, Tony Hatch And Jackie Trent & Vince Martin & Fred Neil

    Post42767211867476171

From the Wikipedia: "Morning Dew", also known as "(Walk Me Out in the) Morning Dew", is a post-apocalyptic folk-rock song written by Canadian singer Bonnie Dobson in 1962, that has become a standard."

"According to Dobson in a 1993 interview, "Morning Dew" was inspired by the film On the Beach.[1]"

"Fred Neil heard Dobson's song and re-arranged it to suit his own style. Tim Rose heard Neil's version and then recorded his own in 1966, adding himself as co-writer. Through a loophole in US copyright law, Rose was able to claim royalties."

"The song is most popularly known today as a cover by the Grateful Dead."

No Grateful Dead version here. If anyone has any other good versions, send em to me and I'll post 'em. (You can sample and buy Bonnie's version "Take Me for a Walk" from Amazon)

Bedazzled has links to several versions of Lee Hazelwood's post-apocalyptic folk-rock ditty, "Morning Dew." They're all terrific. (No link to the Grateful Dead version, which appeared on their first album in 1967.) MP3s: "Morning Dew" by Lee Hazlewood... [Read More]

The Allman Brothers, back when they were still the Allman Joys, released a version of this tune. I don't have it, or I'd send it to you, but I think it's on the boxed set, "Dreams."

Great version by the Jeff Beck Group (when Rod Stewart was with them) on the "Truth" album.

You forgot the 1990 cover by New Wave band Devo! It's on the album Smooth Noodle Maps.

    What about Dave Edmund's version?

How about Einstürzende Neubauten's version on their album Five on the Open-Ended Richter-Scale. Frighteningly, uh, German?

Hey don't forget that Nazareth did a very spacey version of Morning Dew on their long out of print Warner Bros debut album.

Hmm. I just took a quick look at the iTunes store and they have 102 artists listed covering "Morning Dew", including Mungo Jerry, Ralph McTell and Robert Plant.

I listened to the versions above, and then bought the Bonnie Dobson version from iTunes. Her lyrics are a little different from what people might be familiar with from the Dead. Here they are:

    "Good Morning Rain"
    AKA "Morning Dew"
AKA "(Take Me For a Walk in the) Morning Dew"
    Lyrics @ Music: Bonnie Dobson

Take me for a walk in the morning dew, my honey
Take me for a walk in the morning sun, my love
You can't go walking in the morning dew today
You can't go walking in the morning sun today

But listen I hear a man moaning, Lord
Oh yes, I hear a man moaning, Lord
You didn't hear a man moan at all
You didn't hear a man moan at all

But I thought I heard my baby crying, mama
Oh yes I hear my baby crying, mama
You'll never hear your baby cry again
You'll never hear your baby cry again

Oh where have all the people gone
Won't you tell me where all the people have gone
Don't you worry about the people any more
Don't you worry about the people any more

Won't you take me for a walk in the morning dew, my love
please take me for a walk in the morning sun, my honey
You can't go walking in the morning dew today
You can't go walking in the morning sun today

But listen I hear a man moaning, Lord
Oh you didn't hear a man moan at all
But I'm sure I hear my baby crying, mama
You'll never hear your baby cry again

Oh where have all the people gone
Won't you tell me where all the people have gone
Don't you worry about the people any more
Don't you worry about the people any more
Don't you worry about the people any more

Slight correction: many of those "Morning Dew" songs are not covers of Bonnie's song. It appears that title is quite popular, especially amongst the new-agey, celtic and feel-good instrumental types.

DEVO does a version of this.

Final correction: on iTunes, besides the Grateful Dead & Bonnie Dobson, these artists cover "Morning Dew": Blackfoot, Canvey Island Allstars, Dave Graney 'n' the Coral Snakes, Fatal Shore, The Highwaymen, Jeff Beck, King Loser, Krokodil, la Muerte, Lazy Brad Lewis, Long John Baldry, Ralph McTell, The Rats, Ray Dorset a.k.a. Mungo Jerry Blues Band, Robert Plant, Toni Brown, Van Wilks, The Woolies, Zhain & Serena Ryder.

Lulu has an excellent version of this song, back from when she was young.

Let's not forget the great versions by Nova Local, Whiskers and Sweet Smoke

I have to second Einstürzende Neubauten's version. I'm listening to it right now and love it.

The Robert Plant version is excellent, very moving. He attributes his version as being a cover of the version by Jesse Colin Young and The Youngbloods, also excellent.

You say "send me a version" but you don't provide a way to send. So I guess you won't get the lovely Clannad version, from their first album.

    Sad, that.

I'm going to third the Einsturzende Neubauten version, they also did an amazing cover of Sand by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra.

King Loser from New Zealand do a good version.

On their album You Cannot Kill What Does Not Live.

    neck version is great.

    beck

Excellent Belgian band called 'La Muerte' performed an incredible cover of this song on their album 'Experiment on Terror'

the Radiators do a great Dew these days. one of my favorites at http://www.archive.org/details/rads2007-06-15

There's also a version of Morning Dew by an obscure Brighton band called Blow up, which I think was a b-side to their One World Waiting single. Long deleted, of course, but it was a goodie.

"You say "send me a version" but you don't provide a way to send. So I guess you won't get the lovely Clannad version, from their first album.

    Sad, that."
