Here's a few versions of one of my favorite Burt Bacharach/Hal David numbers. I just discovered the Bobbie Gentry one recently, she's a hell of a songwriter herself, and does a very good version of this. As usual for Bacharach/David songs, the Dionne version is the definitive one, in my not-so-humble opinion.

Nice. Pete Jolly does my favorite version of this great Bacharach/David song -- Space Age Pop has it here:

I've heard all the other versions but the Bobbie Gentry cove was new to me, too. As usual, she's terrific, but no one has come close to Dionne's combination of strength and delicacy.

Chrissie Hynde also covered this, not long after 9/11...the parallels between that event and the lyrics are kind of eerie.
