Awesome article, Astro, you might be a Mocker, but your musical culture is vast and profound !!

Mark

Great article, filled me in on lots of bands I wasn't hip to, and explained the parodic roots /split from chanson in ways I had only guessed at before.

Uh........fascinating; thanks. And you got through all that without even so much as a mention of Gainsbourg; but I guess he was really of an entirely different genre. Or maybe I'm just clueless.

Astre Lemocker

You are right about Serge Gainsbourg, he was an existentialist singer-songwriter in the school of Boris Vian from the previous Fifties' generation, and a Jazz pianist before that, playing in the cellars of St. Germain-des-Près... By the time of French Beat, he was pushing his songs to the Yé-Yés, producing and arranging, composing film-scores on the side even;
it's no good to mix-match everything up like if it was one same thing, like lumping Garage-rock with Freakbeat or Bossa Beat, you should know!
