I lost a pretty good job, thanks to Roy Loney--the best thing that ever happened to me. The band I was working with got an offer to open for him on a Monday night. I was scheduled to do a double shift as a bartender. I arranged a substitute and took off after lunch--we had to go to New Haven. We did a killer version of Slow Death. Fame has avoided me ever since.

Yes I am nitpicking and I know it.
I lived in San Francisco from 1967 - 1969 and I remember the Groovies playing the Fillmore Ballroom and later the Carousel Ballroom quite often. I only saw them once, however, but I remember Bill Graham introducing them as, "Flamin' Groovies." I have always referred to them as "The Flamin' Groovies" but all my searches for their music return only Flamin' Groovies without the article 'the.' Interesting that the Bomp 45 has them labeled with the article 'the' while the 1976 LP "Shake Some Action," which contains the song "You Tore Me Down," has them listed without the "The" in their name. Also, I remember at least one "underground" radio station in 1967 and then quite a few by 1969 that probably played their records since they were from that city and appeared quite often in ballrooms around town.
I then lived in Boulder, CO from 1970 - 1974 and even though you say there was no college radio at the time I remember quite well that the University of Colorado had a radio station (KRNW? I called it Karen W) that I listened to almost exclusively. And when I moved to Boston in late 1974 there was an abundance of them. Beacons of light in a period of musical waste. My favorite being WTBS from MIT University. They later sold the call letters to Ted Turner and became Memorial Basement Radio, WMBR.
Anyway, I love your posts and will follow your blogs everywhere.
