Released in July of '67, "Gin House" by Welsh band The Amen Corner provided an unlikely hit for Deram. A cover of an old Bessie Smith song, it's a blues that features Andy Fairweather-Low's anguished vocals. "Gin House" reached as high as number 12 in the charts and stayed in the top 20 for 5 weeks. Amen Corner were now established and they continued to chart with releases on Deram and later Immediate. Andy Fairweather Low had quite a successful career, playing with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bill Wyman and on. The list of artists that Andy has recorded with and toured with is quite long. The organ player, Blue Weaver, later joined The Strawbs, toured with Mott The Hoople, and worked with the Bee Gees for quite a while. I bought this record when it came out, but in 2011, frankly, I'm not sure why it appealed to me at the time.
An interesting side note on this record is that writer's credits are Troy and Henderson, but they wrote a different song called "Gin House Blues"
