FINAL UPDATE: mr guder in the comments say "re: Carpenters Bacharach medley ...Definately mimed. If you look at the whole show, you will find that most of the concert is live. However, both Help and the Bacharach medley are mimed to the studio recordings - how can you tell? Easy! Just listen and compare - they are identical in every way, and the performance even includes all the double tracked vocals and harmonies. There are also a couple of songs in this concert which use the studio recordings for short introductory prompts for a few seconds before switching to live performances (watch Richard rush to catch up during the start of Rainy Days ... and listen to the change in piano tone for proof)."
That settles it for me. I was just confused by all the other actual live stuff and wasn't familiar with the Carpenters Bacharach/ David medley as recorded.
I'm bumping this back up to the front as it's still getting some great comments after all this time...
This is pretty amazing. I guess I knew Karen Carpenter was kind of a hot-shit drummer, but it's amazing to actually hear them all singing like that at the same time. Check out the one part where she's playing this really complicated cowbell thing, while she plays the kit and sings. I've watched it a bunch of times and they're definitely all playing and singing live on this one. From a 1 Hour BBC Live Concert. By the way, how depressing is it (for me I mean) that I have the exact same 4 favorite arrangers as Richard Carpenter? UPDATE: At least one reader thinks I'm wrong about this being live-anybody else wanna chime in? I'll admit, it seems too good to be real but I'm having a hard time finding any tell-tale signs of miming. And doesn't Richard seem to be doing a bit of conducting? Watch that left hand....ANOTHER UPDATE: We have a 2nd person in the comments that says it's mimed. Some questions I still have. Why does Karen pick up and play a cowbell
and then put it back down (During "Always Something There To Remind
Me") if it's mimed? That's certainly some very hard-core miming. I mean, who is she trying to fool? What
are they playing along to? Like, what is the woodwind player listening to
when he starts the song? No one's got headphones, so it's not to a
click. I still can't find one thing that happens in this video that
gives it away as mimed. Carpenters- Bacharach/David Medley (Live).mov
