I recorded a bunch of songs with my old friend Mark Mulcahy for his first solo CD "Fathering" (Mark and I were in a bunch of pre-Miracle Legion bands together including The Obvious, Stray Divides and my band The Hello Strangers). Several made it onto the record, including this one "Bill Jocko" (which was covered by Frank Black for the Mark Mulcahy tribute CD a few years back). I have a bunch of alternate versions of songs from that album that are still unreleased -maybe Mark will let me post some someday?
Playing songs by George Jones, Johnny Cash, Gary Stewart, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Lee Hazlewood, Guy Clark, Roky Erikson, Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Thunders & much much more. This week's Gowanus All-Stars are Spike Priggen, Jay Sherman-Godfrey, Chris Erikson, Jonathan Gregg, CP Roth and Nancy Polstein. With an opening set by Courtney Lee Adams Jr. @ The Rock Shop. 249 4th Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11215
The Gowanus All-Stars is comprised of 6 veterans of NYC's Alt. Country/Americana/Roots-Rock scene brought together by singer Spike Priggen to play an open-ended Monday night residency at Brooklyn's The Rock Shop (249 Fourth Avenue Brooklyn, NY). They'll be playing Honky-Tonk, Country-Rock and other Cosmic American Musics every Monday from 8-11.
Here's me playing bass in Dumptruck circa 1986. Seth Tiven is singing and playing guitar. Kirk Swan is playing lead guitar, and Shawn King Devlin is on the drums. We're playing live in our rehearsal space for a Cable Access show called "30 Go". Here's the entire clip.
The Streams will play our first show in about 20 years at Cafe Nine in New Haven, CT this Saturday night, performing our recently released, 14-song Civil War themed CD "Today I Died" (Recorded at the original Studio Red in Philadelphia by Adam Lasus).
The Streams are David Brooks - Songwriter, singer and guitarist (Dave was also in Twee-Pop faves The Lean-To's), Bill Beckett on Lead Guitar (Enokizu 78), Baby Huey frontman and original Miracle Legion member Jeff Weiderschall on Drums, and me, Spike Priggen on bass and back-up vocals.
Although the songs are Civil War themed, the music is not. The influences run the gamut from Prefab Sprout and The Verlaines to Led Zeppelin (in fact Dave composed all the songs in an obscure open tuning he copped from Jimmy Page.) You can listen to a few songs below.
This Saturday Night @ Cafe Nine, 250 State Street, New Haven, CT 06511
All 3 of my CDs are available for listening on Spotify
"Spike Priggen is like a musician unstuck in time -- his music manages to sound a bit (and sometimes even more than a bit) like Jeff Lynne ("I Know Everything"), Jeff Lynne producing Badfinger ("Hideaway"), Big Star ("Little Star"), and any number of past musical icons, without ever actually mimmicking any of them" - Bruce Eder (All Music Guide)
